  1. Discuss neurophysiology and action potential
  2. List and describe the composition of local anesthetic agents
  3. Discuss the properties, precautions, and contraindications for the following local anesthetics: lidocaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine, articaine, bupivacaine
  4. Discuss the importance of obtaining patient’s medical/dental history
  5. List the steps to administering successful local anesthesia
  6. Correlating the maxillary and mandibular injections to the teeth and areas anesthetized

About the Speaker: 
​​Ms. Irina Novopoltseva received her associate degree in dental hygiene from Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) in 2007, her baccalaureate degree in education from Youngstown State University in 2010, and her MBA with a concentration in human resources management from The State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2016. 
Irina Novopoltseva joined The Ohio State University’s College of Dentistry as a full-time hygienist at the Dental Faculty Practice in 2018. In addition to practicing dental hygiene, she provided clinical instruction to the students at Columbus State Community College. She began a full-time faculty position as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Dental Hygiene in 2020 and is the Course Director for: Pain and Anxiety Management, Instructional Strategies, Educational Theory and Methodology, Research Methods and Application courses teaching BSDH, BS dental hygiene students including dental hygiene graduate students. Additionally, she leads Practicums and Internships experiences across the programs. She previously taught as an allied dental preceptor at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio, where she worked with both dental hygiene and dental assisting students. She re-designed multiple courses at Tri-C to accommodate distance learning demands for students in traditional courses. She has both didactic and clinical teaching experience in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning settings. Her research interests include utilizing technology for classroom innovation, professionalism, ethics and increasing dental hygiene knowledge for community oral health.

About the Course:  
Summary:   Since the 2000 Surgeon General’s report on oral health, interest in oral health by non-oral health professionals as well as the public has steadily increased.  The research and promotion of the links between oral disease and systemic health has further propelled oral health into the public arena.  Updates will be provided on the efforts to improve oral health outcomes across the lifespan by Ohio Health Ohio, a statewide coalition of partners who advocate and educate  to improve oral and overall health for all Ohioans.Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe Oral Health Ohio’s statewide activities to improve oral health outcomes
  2. Identify root causes of oral health disparities
  3. Understand the current oral health environment in Ohio, including data​

About the Speakers:
Jayne Klett Bio
Jayne Klett has a dental hygiene career spanning 39 years. As an OSU graduate, her employment history includes clinician, dental health consultant for the Ohio Department of Health and faculty at Owens Community College, Dept. of Dental Hygiene.    Jayne retired from the Dental Center of Northwest Ohio in Toledo as the Director of Community Development and Outreach. She was responsible for care management, community education and training for non-dental professionals in oral health prevention and promotion.
 Jayne stays active in her local component in Toledo.  She represents ODHA on the Board of Directors of Oral Health Ohio – a coalition of interdisciplinary agencies working toward improved oral health for all Ohio citizens.

Marla Morse Bio
Marla joined Oral Health Ohio in September 2017.  In her capacity as Program Director, Marla oversees implementation of the coalition’ statewide strategic work.   Marla’s expertise is in development and implementation of community-wide initiatives.   Marla has worked in the areas of public health, acute and long-term health care, domestic violence, mental health, and childhood trauma.  Marla received Masters’ Degrees in Social Work (MSW) and Public Policy and Administration (MPA) from Columbia University. 
 Marla is a member of the American Network of Oral Health Coalitions (ANOHC) and serves on numerous national, state and county committees including the Oral Health Progress & Equity Network (OPEN) Medicare Work Group, Hamilton County Oral Health Coalition, and Medicaid Quality Improvement Learning Academy (MeQILA), Dental Quality Alliance.   ​
